"He was always thinking," said a member of his family. The trait came down from his grandfather, mega-developer and agriculturalist, Hugh MacRae. Later, Hugh II created the Oleander Company in partnership with James W. Rouse. Independence Mall came later, in 1979. Mr. MacRae chose the name because of his fierce patriotism. Mr. MacRae was about as proud as any American in the state of North Carolina – so proud that rather than grumble about his taxes, he gave generously to the Army through contributions to Fort Bragg.
Hugh MacRae II took his place gladly and regularly during the forming and operation of the 1898 Memorial Foundation. He was an excellent example of a blue-blooded Southerner doing an about-face.
The MacRae family wishes to thank those who worked so hard to make his last days as pleasant as possible. They include; Caroline Tew; Dr. John Lovitt; Larry Williams; Lower Cape Fear Hospice; and the nurses and staff on the 4th floor of New Hanover County Regional Medical Center.
Almost at the very end, a friend observed him for a few moments as his condition began to deteriorate rapidly:
"I think he was using his brain up until the very last minute," the friend said.
You know they say that the person who is dying sometimes has sway in the timing.
He knew what was coming; and had the grace and smarts just to let go and do it fast;
…and to march fearlessly with that perfect posture straight into the next and much improved reality."
Hugh MacRae is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bambi; four children, Hugh MacRae III and wife Ann, Nelson MacRae and wife Liz, Marguerite (Meg) Bellamy MacRae. Rachel MacRae Grey; four grandchildren, Daniel MacRae, Annie MacRae, Nelson MacRae III, and Cameron MacRae; and one sister, Marguerite Boucher.
