Theodore V. Mathews died at 8:30 o'clock, Wednesday evening after an illness of two years. Deceased was born at Pittsburg, Penn., on Oct. 4th, 1847. In 1867 he located in Springfield, Missouri following the stage business until 1871. He the moved to Idaho, where he had the management of the Northwestern Stage Co.'s interests. From Idaho he went to Virginia City, Nevada, where he remained for a short time. He next moved to San Francisco and then came to Santa Cruz, arriving here March 1878. Soon after his arrival he was appointed Deputy County Clerk under H. E. Makinney, filling the position until he was elected County Assessor in 1882, and holding that office until 1891. After retiring from office he was engaged in the real estate and insurance business with J. R. Chace. When the latter retired from the firm O. L. Tuttle succeeded him.

Mr. Mathews leaves a widow, and three children, Mrs. O. L. Tuttle, Mrs. Carl Kratzenstein and T. V. Matthews Jr. Deceased was a well known citizen in Santa Cruz for many years, taking an active interest in public affairs and in the fraternal organizations of which he was a member. His popularity was attested by the large vote he received when he was a candidate for office. He was a man of much clerical ability. Interment will be in this city.
