Laurence “Larry” E. Allen Jr., age 84, passed away October 19, 2015.

Larry was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Laurence E. Sr. and Helen (Hendrickson) Allen on November 30, 1930. He “went to school in 18 different states.” He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953. Larry completed a B.S. in Geology at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1955. After working for the Army Corps of Engineers in Alaska in the late 1950’s, Larry moved to Council Bluffs, with his bride, Carolyn (Cramton). Larry was actively involved in community and state politics. He served in the Iowa State Legislature from 1966-1968. He was the Pottawattamie County Republican Chairperson. In 1980, Larry was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Detroit. He served on the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors from 1985-1988. A member of the Sons of Norway, Larry served as its president. Larry donated more than 26 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross and proudly wore his “Gallon” pin. Larry was a member of the Isaac Walton League and a recruiting representative of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Larry enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and gardening. Larry enjoyed road trips, travelling to all 50 states. Family and friends knew that he might arrive unannounced to visit.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and beloved sister, Shirley Lou Allen.

Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Carolyn, who he met in Alaska; 3 children, Laura (Karl) Digman, Trip (Amy) Allen and Paul (Chris) Allen; 7 grandchildren, Matthew, Anna, Emily, Leaf, Olivia, Kyra and Rosie; brother, Fredric V. Allen; and many nieces and nephews.

A private Celebration of Life will be planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross in Larry’s name.
