Sgt. Terrence Felipe Carraway, 52, departed this life on Wednesday October 3, 2018 in Florence County. He was the husband of Allison Carraway and the father of Rashad Carraway. He was a 30 year veteran of the Florence City Police Dept. You may visit the family at 620 McCowns Millpond Rd. Darlington, SC. 29540.

Funeral services: Florence Center 3300 West Radio Drive, Florence SC 29501, Monday October 8, 2018 at 12:00 noon.

He will be laid to rest in the Florence Memorial Gardens.Terrence Carraway, 52, of Darlington, SC had just been honored for his 30 years of service with the Florence Police Department. Carraway was killed, and six of his comrades wounded, when a man opened fire from inside his home on deputies who came to serve a search warrant.

He grew up in Darlington and graduated from Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology in 1984. He attended Livingstone College in North Carolina where he played football. Carraway was a U. S. Air Force veteran of the 315th Airlift Wing stationed out of Charleston Air Force Base. He worked for the Florence Police Department since he was hired nearly 31 years ago, on October 28, 1987. He was a devoted family man who loved karaoke, the Oakland Raiders, was a fan of motorcycles and was a youth league football coach. Carraway took the time to get to know community members by name. Carraway had a heart for underprivileged children, teaching them to swim and starting and helping to run a summer camp for youth. He also organized a haunted house every Halloween for area children. He leaves behind a wife and young adult children.

On Thursday night, October 4, 2018 a vigil was held honoring Carraway. Hundreds of community members, law enforcement officers and first responders packed First Baptist Church in downtown Florence, SC. Attendees then filed outside into the church parking lot holding lit candles. In silence, some placed their candles on the ground near a Florence police car. A public viewing will also be held on Monday, October 8, 2018 at the Florence Center, 3300 W. Radio Drive, Florence, SC from 9 to 11 AM. A memorial service will follow at 12 PM.

Sergeant Terrence F. Carraway

Florence, SC - Sergeant Terrence F. Carraway transitioned from this earthly realm to his heavenly home on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 in the line of duty. He was born in Florence, SC to the late Delores "Sabra" Carraway Onwuka.

He was educated in the public schools of Darlington County. Terrence was an all- around athlete and a 1984 graduate of Mayo High School The Golden Bears!!! He LOVED football and was eternally devoted to his Oakland Raiders. Sgt. Carraway was a 30 year highly decorated veteran police officer with the Florence Police Department, earning many recognitions to include: "Police Officer of the Year," "Hometown Hero" and the "Medal of Valor." He was a retired Air Force Reservist after 23 years of stellar service as a Security Journeyman with the 315th Security Forces Squadron, Charleston AFB. In 2002 he became the first African American airman from Charleston Air Force Reserve Command to be named "NCO of the Year World Wide" and he was selected as one of the Twelve Outstanding Airmen of 2002. He was a faithful member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Darlington, SC, were he served as a member of the Ushers Ministry, Male Choir, C. L. Bowens Choir and other ministries of the church especially working with the youth. Terrence devoted his life to developing long lasting relationships with children who loved and honored him like a father. If he ever befriended you, you surely had a friend for life. Brother Carraway did not limit the definition of family to a blood connection; for Terrence, brothers and sisters were connected by the heart.

He leaves to cherish fond and loving memories his devoted wife of 29 years: Allison Greene Carraway; his sons: Terrence Rashad Carraway (Allyson) of the home and Tislam Larenzo Blathers of Queens, NY; brothers: Antonio Blathers of Brooklyn, NY, Daniel Leverne Blathers of Florence, SC, and Jameele Scott of Atlanta, GA; a sister: Ngozi Lee Onwuka (Adrian) of Darlington, SC; a serogate brother: Lamais Muldrow of Darlington, SC; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, too numerous to mention.
