Obituary:
DIED,
In Franklin, on the 23d ult., Mr. SELA SHIRTLIFF, in the 73 year of his age.
The deceased was one of the first settlers of this county. By long residence and a just and amicable demeanor, he gained a large circle of friends. From early life he had made Jesus his leader and his hope.--
During the last few months of his life, his sufferings were very intense. He bore them with much composure, and died triumphant in the hope of joy beyond the grave. COM.

Per the 1860 United States Federal Census in Franklin Mills, Portage County, Ohio, Selah was a farmer born in Connecticut.

Selah was the eldest of five children and eldest of four sons born to Noah Shurtliff and Lydia Brown. 5x grandson of the colonist William Shurtleff from Ecclesfield, England. He married Pranna Phillips, publish date of 09 July 1809 and had five children; Lydia, Desire, Pruanna, Elizabeth and Eslie.
