Barnabas Lothrope Adams Sr, was born to Elizabeth "Betsy" Chapman and Captain Joshua Adams.

Barnabus married Julia Annie Banker on June 23, 1846 in Des Moine, Iowa. His second wife was Hannah Gove Chase.

Barnabas Lothrop Adams, who was born in Canada, found his way to Iowa, where he married Julia Ann Banker. There they fell in with Brigham Young and his Mormons, became converts, and joined them in their long trek through the wilderness in search of a haven. That was in 1847, while the country in which they finally settled was still owned by Mexico. Asenath Ann Adams was born about three weeks after the Mormons ended their wild and dangerous journey.
