HANS EMMANUEL CARL von VITTINGHOFF was born in Hamburg, Germany, the son of Carl Heinrich August von Vittinghoff and Nanni Louise Johanna Speckhahn. He moved to the United States when he was twelve years old and graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology in 1907, where he was a member of the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi. He joined the Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation in 1909, and in 1910 was the superintendent of a gas works. Mr. von Vittinghoff worked on projects mainly in the chemical and public utility fields, and was a consulting engineer for Stone & Webster at the time of his death in 1943. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He married Doris Erlenkotter in Hoboken, New Jersey on June 30, 1909.
