David Francis Byrne, 82, of Coppell, Texas went to be with Christ on March 30, 2015. His devotion to family and his firm belief in God guided his life and brought him peace.
David was born to Thomas Ryan and Ruth E. Byrne in White Plains, NY on November 28, 1932. He was the eighth of ten children. He was devout to the Catholic faith and remained so throughout his life. He graduated law school from University of Detroit Law School passing the bar at age 22. He entered the Air Force serving in the JAG at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. He advocated for and respected the enlisted soldier. Upon honorable discharge, he joined National Gypsum Company where he had a long and successful career, specializing in labor negotiations, and retiring as Vice President of Human Resources and Director.
David was blessed with a large and loving family and they were blessed in return. He met the love of his life, Nora Jane Burns, at a picnic when introduced by his classmate, the late Robert Burns (Nora's brother). He and Nora married on February 5, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan at St. Catherine's Chapel. David helped Nora raise their eight children with patience, discipline, love and good humor. He was a dedicated husband and hands-on dad and grandpa. He is dearly missed by those who loved him.
David was charming, witty, smart, and was famous for never signing any document that was not thoroughly read and negotiated. He was a firm believer in the power of education, encouraging all his children and grandchildren to get, at a minimum a college degree. He was an educator at heart, teaching Sunday school, ESL, was a reading tutor, and a fund raiser for Lincoln High School in Dallas.
David, also known as "Dave" to his friends, was a sports enthusiast. He treated his grandkids to trips to watch the Mavericks and Rangers with him. He appreciated the amateur athlete too; attending his grandchildren's sporting matches. David enjoyed the arts attending the theater, art exhibits, and his grandchildren's musical programs and recitals.
David, with Nora, was part of the St. Joseph's independent living community. They attended church at St. Ann's. While a member of St. Ann's, he enjoyed the camaraderie of the informal men's group known as "the Bagel Brothers". "Big Dave" as he was known to his friends in the group, enjoyed their company each day after morning mass for conversation, coffee, and of course, bagels.
David is survived by his wife Nora; six daughters; two sons; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and his two sisters: Mimi and Ann. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: John, Tom, Bill, and Dan; his sisters: Ruth, Dot, and Mary Jane; and his grandson, Brian.
David will be honored with a Mass at the Sacred Heart Cemetery Chapel at 10:00am on April 6, 2015. Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Siobhan Bennett's Residence. Father Leon Duesman will officiate the service. The family requests that any donations be made to the Jesuits, New Orleans Province, 710 Baronne Street, Suite B, New Orleans, LA 70113-1064.
