My dad never had a bad word to say about anyone... Unless he was really angry. It's a trait he inherited from his beloved mother. I used to say that if anyone made my Granny mad enough to voice her irritation, maybe that person really was that shady. The same is true of my dad. Mom tells me all the time that I'm just like him, but that is one trait I wish I'd inherited. I respected his patience with people, and that he genuinely believed it takes all kinds to make up this world, we're all in this together, and - he was so fond of saying - "can't we all just get along?"

You hear people say someone was "larger than life." My dad was not that dude. He was the one hanging loose, digging the music, drinking his beer, maybe telling some corny jokes. He was paying attention, though. He'd pipe up out of the shadow, say something profoundly true, make everyone go, "Wait, what?" And then he was back to trying to enjoy his night.

He loved his family, birth or home-grown - even the difficult ones (me). The friends he made in his travels became family to him and to all of us. He was kind and funny and loyal. He loved his wife and his kids, and he'd do whatever he could to make us happy. We were lucky to have him, and we miss him so much.

Thank you for never giving up on me, M'Daddy. I wouldn't have the life I have now if not for you and Mom.
