The Wages Of Sin Is Death

Prentiss May 5.- (Friday) -L. P. Phillips, whose scheduled execution for the November 1942, murder of D. L. Broome was twice stayed by executive clemency, paid with his life in the state's portable electric chair here shortly after midnight, Chancery Clerk Clifford Bass said early this morning.

He was strapped in the chair at 12:34 by State Executioner C. W. Watson and was pronounced dead seven minutes later by Doctors Holder and Graham.

There was no hesitation in walk as he tread the "last mile" before a scant dozen spectators. Smoking cigarettes one after another, he became hardened to the ordeal a few hours before it occurred. He did not say a word as he walked in to the chair, took his seat and the black hood placed over his face. It was a contrast to the jovial man he was just a few short hours earlier.

In the office of Sheriff G. O. Berry, the man held prayers and consulations with Reverand Sewell during the afternoon and early part of the night.

The crime for which he paid the death penalty was commited in Jefferson Davis county, five miles south of Bassfield. The court found him guilty of beating Brome, a farmer-recluse, to death, chopping his body up and setting fire to the dead man's home. The death penalty was meted out, but two successive stays of execution by the governor delayed the execution. Earlier today the office of Governor Thomas L. Bailey announced there would be no more stays of executions.

A sister and uncle of Phillips claimed the body. They made plans to bury his remains in Prentiss cemetery sometime today.
