Susan Betts Bevill Livingston, died Friday, Feb 28, 2014,in Birmingham. She was born in Jasper, AL, on Sep 6, 1950.
She graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington, VA, and graduated from Ithaca College in 1972. In 1977, Susan graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law. She began her legal career as an assistant attorney general for the state of Alabama, and later worked as an assistant US attorney in the Middle District of Alabama. In 1985, she joined the law firm of Balch and Bingham, where she was a partner in the Energy Section, a member of the Management Council and chair of the Diversity Committee.
Livingston was a strong believer in mentoring, and a number of young attorneys received the benefit of her investment in their lives and careers. She served on the boards of the Alabama Law School Foundation, the Alabama Law Institute, and the Women's Section of the Birmingham Bar Association. Susan was a graduate of Leadership Birmingham and the MOMENTUM women's leadership program. She was honored in 2003 as one of the Birmingham Business Journal's Top Birmingham Women.
She also received many honors for the countless hours she devoted to civic causes. Among other things, she served on the boards for the YWCA of Central Alabama, the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama and the Legal Aid Society of Birmingham. A former Girl Scout troop leader, Susan received a Women of Distinction award from the organization in 2004 and, in 2012, received its prestigious Mildred Bell Johnson Award. She belonged to the Women's Committee of 100, Women's Network and Zonta Club of Birmingham. She remained active in the Democratic Party.
Susan enjoyed life to the fullest, grabbing every day and wringing the most from it. She was funny, gracious, and ready for an adventure. Among her favorite pastimes was paddling, and some of her most enduring and special friendships developed over 25 years of canoeing, kayaking and camping. Whether on the river or on a challenging hike, Susan loved nature and being outdoors.
She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Congressman Tom Bevill and Lou Betts Bevill. She is survived by her husband, James Archibald Livingston III; daughter, Particia Elizabeth Livingston; her sister, Patricia Bevill Warren (Bill); her brother, Donald Herman Bevill (Karen); her father-in-law and mother-in-law, James A Livingston Jr and Margaret Gresham Livingston; three sisters-in-law, Mary Margaret Livingston Hindman (Brian), Kathy Rutledge (Paul) and Dr Elizabeth Livingston; her aunts and uncles, Betty Bevill Powell, the Rev and Mrs Charles F Betts and Mr and Mrs Erwin C Betts; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many, many friends.
Visitation will be Monday, Mar 3, 2014 from 5:30 until 7:30 pm at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood. Services will be Tuesda, Mar 4, 2014 at 11 am at Cathedral Church of the Advent, and the family will receive friends afterward at the Church Clingman Commons.
Memorials may be made to the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama, the YWCA of Central Alabama, Cathedral Church of the Advent or the charity of your choice.
