CIVIL SITTINGS OF THE SUPREME COURT
.. without a jury - William Dew v. Thos Riddler, claim for possession of land
and then on 25 Sep 1900
.. The case of William Dew v Thomas Riddler, a claim for the division of a piece of land in the Hutt district, 94 acres in extent, was begun in the Supreme Court before Mr Justice Edwards to-day. Dew, for whom Mr Hislop appeared, is in occupation of the land, which he wishes divided into two pieces of equal value, one piece to be for himself and the other for certain persons for whom Riddler is trustee. It was stated that there was a mortgage on the property, and Mr Hislop suggested that if the land was divided each part might bear one half of the mortgage. Mr Ollivier appeared for the defendant, who objected to the proposal to divide the property. After some evidence had been taken the case was adjourned for a week

Evening Post, 11 Jan 1902
On Thursday, 16th instant, a highly-improved farm property at the Taita, on the main Hutt road, containing some 94 acres, in the occupation of Mr William Dew, will be sold without reserve

DEATH
DEW - On the 4th August, at his late residence, Wellington South, William Dew, in his 82nd year

NOTE about the group photo ..
Group of Wellington early settlers from 1841-42, probably photographed at Newtown Park, Anniversary Day, 1913. In the group are: Mesdames M. T. Oakes, S. Harris, A. Martin, Elizabeth Harvey, Brown, Edwards; Messrs H. Barltrop, William Dew, George Tattle, Enoch Tonks, G. Waterson (names not in order in which people are sitting. Enoch Tonks is 3rd from left standing
The day was Wellington's tribute to her pioneers held on Wed 22 Jan 1913. The main attraction was the early settlers gala and old games like quoits, skittles, catching the greasy pig, grinning through a horse collar, Aunt Sally (where players throw sticks at a model of an old woman's head). As the veterans and survivors of the earliest settlers arrived on the ground (summoned by a jolly man with a megaphone) their names, ages etc were entered in a book (it was discovered that there were 3 ladies present who had been born in the '20s!). The Governor and other dignitaries like Lord & Lady Liverpool attended, the 4 oldest ladies present were invited to present a bouquet to Lady Liverpool. The programme included such things as yacht, rowing & motor races, maypole dancing, baby competitions, an all-day picnic and mixed bathing on the beach!! Mr Jupp's Band provided the music at the grounds and the Wellington Waterside Workers band provided music on the wharf and the Boy Scouts kindly offered their services to help the old folk!. Sports were also held at Petone where the first settlers landed in 1840. The ss Maori took 400 excursionists on a trip to Picton. By mid afternoon there were a few thousand people present and events continued into the night with Scottish dancing and ju-jitsu & boxing exhibitions. A wonderful way to thank our early pioneers
