Martin was born in Mayo Ireland in 1877. He moved to Australia in 1896, and fought with the Queensland Imperial Bushmen in South Africa during the Boer War.
After the war, he worked in the mines. Met and married Clara Dearden, and returned to Australia. They had 2 daughters: Adeline and Irene.
Martin re-joined the army and enlisted in the 25th transport battalion. He left of Egypt in January 15, but soon after showed signs of Tuberculosis(miners lungs). He returned to Brisbane, and passed away in the care of the Dalby Jubilee Sanatorium soon after.

In loving memory of my dear husband Martin Costello, who fell asleep 13th of April 1916 aged 38 years.
Also his beloved wife and our darling mother Clara Costello, who died 17th of January 1939 aged 56 years.
