Richard Fredrick Formanack, born in 1916, was the second of five children of Fred and Augusta Formanack. He was born and grew up in Miner County, South Dakota, and graduated from Fedora High School in 1934. After high school he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the National Youth Administration in South Dakota. He joined the US Army in early 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps and US Air Force for the next 20 years. During and after WWII he served in Guam, Hawaii, Illinois, Germany, and North Carolina, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. His specialty was aircraft mechanics, and he both worked on aircraft and trained and supervised Air Force aircraft mechanics. After retiring from active duty, he settled his family in Phoenix, AZ, and worked for a number of years in aircraft maintenance, in a civilian capacity, at Luke Air Force Base in Litchfield, AZ. Richard married Dorothy Ford, whom he met while stationed in the San Francisco area, in 1946. They had five daughters and one son.
