Funeral Mass for Russell Paul Fremin Jr., 76, Lawton, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Vuong “Vic” Luong officiating. He died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018.

Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.

Russell was born April 9, 1942, in New Orleans to Ethel and Russell Paul Fremin Sr. Russell grew up in Lawton where he attended school, graduating from Lawton High School. He played in the 1961 Jr. Rose Bowl — the Cameron Aggies football team won that game. He was an educator and taught at Lawton High School and Cameron University for many years. He was very involved in the Lawton and MacArthur High School football programs and served as an assistant coach.

Besides being a teacher, he was the owner of Martin’s Restaurant and Steakhouse. He was a man with many and varying interests. He loved the mountains and hiking. He enjoyed being outdoors — he especially enjoyed spending time in Colorado and Alaska. He was a founding member of Lawton’s Chocolate Festival. He is a strong supporter of the Lawton Community Theater and Philharmonic.

Russell married his first wife, Elaine Chlapowski in 1966. He later married Opal Sims in 1979.

He is survived by his wife, Opal, of the home; his sons and daughters-in-law: David and Mary Fremin, Charles and Robin Fremin, Joseph and Stephanie Fremin, and Patrick and Angela Fremin; stepson and daughterin-law, Brent and Shanna Helm; daughters and sons-in-law: Lynette Hall, Michelle and Andy Benke, Theresa and Tom Huber; stepdaughters and sons-in-law: Teresa and Vincent Wilton and Kris and Jeff Colston; brothers and sisters-in-law: Thomas and Ilka Fremin and John and Waynna Fremin; sisters and brothers-in-law: “Pete” Frey, Peggie and Woody Scott, Marianna and Mike McGerw, and Denise and Brian Smith. He also leaves behind 35 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jeff Fremin; his stepson, Tim Helm; and his brother-in-law, Jack Frey.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lawton High School Football team, ATTN: Sandy at 601 Fort Sill Blvd., Lawton, OK 73507.

A special visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at the funeral home..
