Larry was a 50-year member of the Black Diamond Fire Department in Centenary, and on September 21, 2014, was honored by the Indiana General Assembly for his service. He enjoyed fishing with his friend, Bob Godden. Bob also worked with him at the "Men's Club" at Clinton Gardens Nursing Home entertaining residents there. Larry loved to do woodworking and made many items for family and friends. He liked to bowl and with his wife enjoyed square dancing. He also worked with taxidermy. Larry graduated from Clinton High School in 1954. He married Wendy King Shannon on March 6, 1958, and she survives him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Curt Shannon; 2 brothers, William J. Shannon and Windie Shannon.
He is survived by his wife, Wendy; 2 daughters, Barbara (Tony) Avenatti of Clinton and Judy Abbinett of Terre Haute; a sister, Connie (John) Sprinkle of Terre Haute; a half-brother, Carl Shannon of Florida; 4 grandchildren, Sarah Avenatti, Sean Avenatti, Guy Switzer, and Garreth Abbinett; 2 great-grandchildren, Xavier Wheeler and Dixon Brooks; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, from 1 to 3 pm at Frist Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm at the funeral home with Celebrant Marta Adubato officiating. Burial will follow in Spangler Cemetery in Blanford.
