ALEXANDER WITHER (1856–1923)

Alexander Wither was born on 6th March 1856, at Barmore Farm, 15 minutes after his twin sister Jane. They were the children of Alexander Wither, farmer, and his wife Helen Wither, née Ritchie. According to the twins' birth record, Alexander was not present when their births were registered on the 28th.

Taken from the wedding record, Alexander Wither, bachelor, aged 24, of Glen Cottage, Awhirk, married Margaret Rankin, spinster, aged 19, of Sandmill, on 27th September 1880, at Sandmill [in Stoneykirk]. Margaret's parents are confirmed as James Rankin, shoemaker (deceased), and his wife Annie Rankin, née Birch; and Alexander's as Alexander Wither, farmer, and his wife Helen Wither, née Ritchie (both deceased). A witness at the wedding, which was registered on the 29th, at Stoneykirk, was Mary Rankin, who is likely to be Margaret's sister.

Alexander and Margaret Wither had at least 8 children:

1) Mary Wither (1880–1928) [also buried in this lair]
2) Jane Wither (1882–1949)
3) Agnes Wither (1885–1955) [also buried in this lair]
4) Alexander Wither (1887–1948)
5) John Wither (1890–1957)
6) Margaret Wither (1892–1893)

8) Frances Davis Wither (1896–1969)

According to his death record, Alexander Wither, master joiner, married to Margaret Rankin, died, aged 67, on 18th August 1923, at 66 Queen Street, Kirkintilloch. Son John Wither, residing in Norwich, registered his death.

Alexander's obituary appeared in the Kirkintilloch Herand newspaper on 22nd August 1923. The text reads:

"WITHER.–At 66 Queen Street, Kirkintilloch, on 18th August, Alexander Wither, joiner, beloved husband of Margaret Rankin.–Deeply regretted."

Alexander Wither was buried in lair number 1, section A, plot S, of the Auld Aisle Cemetery in Kirkintilloch. Also buried in this lair is Alexander's wife Margaret, their daughters Mary and Agnes, and their grandson Marcello Di Paolo, the son of Frances Davis Wither.
