MARGARET WITHER (1858–1927)
aka Maggie

Margaret Wither was born on 18th February 1858, at Barmore, Wigtownshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland to tenant farmer Alexander Wither (1822–1865) and his wife Helen Wither (née Ritchie) (1828–1878).

Alexander and Helen Wither had at least 10 children, of whom Margaret was the 6th to be baptised:

1) Helen Steel Wither (1850–1888) [named after her maternal grandmother, Helen Steel]
2) John Ritchie Wither (1852–1858)
3) Elizabeth Wither (1854–1932)
4) Jane Wither (1856–1908) [twin]
5) Alexander Wither (1856–1923) [twin]
6) Margaret Wither (1858–1927)
7) John William Wither (1859–1903) [originally named William John Wither]
8) Peter Ritchie Wither (1861–1934)
9) Archibald Wither (1862–1947)
10) George Wither (1864–1952)

After living in Wigtownshire, she lived in Kelvinside, Glasgow with her siblings Helen, Peter, Archibald and George; subsequently, she lived in Hawick, Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders, where she ran a successful millinery and dressmaking business in partnership with Mary Ann Hathorn. [See Mary Ann's memorial gallery for ads for their business Hathorn & Wither.]

Margaret never married but had one daughter at the age of 16: Jessie Wither was born on 22nd June 1874, and brought up at Lochans Mills by Margaret's grandmother Helen Ritchie (née Steel), and after Helen's death, by Margaret's aunt Margaret Ritchie. Jessie herself never married and no record has been found of her having had any children. According to her death record, she was an attendant nurse during World War II, and died on 16th January 1943. Her father's name is not cited in her birth or death records. Jessie was cremated in Edinburgh on the 19th January 1943.

The details on Margaret's death record are as follows: Margaret Wither, ladies' outtfitter, single, died of gastric carcinoma, aged 68, on Friday 4th March 1927, at 24 Orchard Terrace, Hawick. Margaret's sister Elizabeth Darrie (née Wither), of 4 Torphichen Place, Edinburgh, registered her death on 10th March at Hawick.

As per her obituaries, Margaret was buried in Wellogate Cemetery, Hawick, in Section "Parochial" in Lair No: 757 on Monday 7th March 1927. [See obit images attached.] Margaret's elder sister, Helen Steel Wither, also a dressmaker who moved to Hawick, is buried with her in this lair.

Margaret's obituaries read:

"WITHER – at Gallowa', 24 Orchard Terrace in the 4th inst. MARGARET WITHER, (of Misses Hathorn & Wither). Funeral to Wellogate Cemetery on Monday at One o'clock. Friends please accept this (the only) intimation and invitation. No flowers."

"DEATH OF MISS WITHER – The death occurred this morning of Miss Margaret Wither (of Misses Hathorn & Wither). The deceased lady retired some years ago after carrying on a highly successful millinery and dressmaking business in partnership with Miss Hathorn. She was a prominent member of Hawick Women's Unionist Association and a devoted member of Wilton Parish Church. Miss Wither and Miss Hathorn were entertained by Hawick Women's Unionist Association on their return from an American tour about six months ago."

Mary Ann Hathorn was interred near Margaret in Wellogate cemetery on 11th March 1937 in Section: Wilson Presentation – Lair No: 76.

I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to Tom Wither and Gary Horecka for the treasure trove of Wither information that they have given me; and for posting, across The Pond, the photograph of Margaret and younger brother Peter, which I scanned, enhanced and uploaded to this profile.

On the back of this photograph, in Margaret's handwriting, is written: "Taken at Long Beach California / 29-Aug / Uncle Peter & Myself". My best guess is that this means 29th August 1926: Margaret sailed with Mary Ann Hathorn on 1st May 1926 from Greenock, Scotland to Quebec, Canada on the White Star Line steamship Regina, and visited her brothers in Steamboat Springs and Long Beach. As mentioned above, the ladies' tour of America was cited in Margaret's obituary.
