Mrs. C. C. Emde Dies;
Funeral Held Tuesday

The sudden death of Mrs. C. C. Emde which occurred Friday night at 12:45 o'clock brought shocking sorrow to her family and many friends.

Mrs. Emde had been ill for the past two weeks, having suffered a severe heart attack at that time. However she had steadily improved until it was thought she was out of danger. Shortly before her death her daughter, Buel, who was caring for her mother during the night, noticed she was restless and asked her if she wanted anything. Mrs. Emde replied "no" and said that she would "soon go to sleep". Soon afterwards she turned over abruptly and her daughter and husband hastened to her side to find that she had another bad attack and passed away just as the doctor, hastily summoned, arrived. She had entered into her eternal sleep from which there is no awakening in this world of sorrow.

Maria, daughter of Nathaneil and Mary Ann (Wodel) Thurman, was born near Richmond, April 25, 1860. She was the youngest child in a family of five children of whom she is the last member.
She grew to womanhood in Washington county, where she lived her entire life.

On February 12, 1885, she was united in marriage with Charles C. Emde of Wellman, the ceremony taking place at the Marton O'Louglin home in Washington where she had made her home for several years. One year after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Emde moved to the farm home east of Wellman where they resided until their death. Her husband preceded her in death March 16, 1935.

Six children were born to them, two of whom have passed away in death; Burrell, a world war soldier died in 1919, and Evert, the oldest son on December 13, 1937. Mrs. Emde never fully recovered from the shock of this recent bereavement.

There remain to mourn the loss of an exceptionally devoted mother, two sons and two daughters; Morton of West Chester, Karl, of Wellman, Bertha wife of Harry Gardner, of South English and Buel, wife of Irvin E. Hasty of Wellman; also ten grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

In her youth, Mrs. Emde joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and remained a faithful member. As long as she was able she attended services and took part in the activities of the church. Her chief interest in life was centered in her home where she was devoted to the comfort and well-being of her loved ones. It is the writer's privilege to remember the hospitality of her house which was freely extended to us in very enjoyable visits.

She was a faithful wife, a loving mother, a kind, helpful, friend and neighbor. Thus will she be remembered by a host of friends who mourn her departure. Her example of loving kindness will long be remembered by those who knew her.

Funeral services were held at her late home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Paul Hann. There was no music, but Rev. Hann read her favorite hymn, "In the Sweet Bye and Bye". Casket bearers were her grandson, Boyd Emde, and near friends -- Chas. Schachner, E. C. Jones, Clarence Wetrich, Frank Schwartz and Lester Ferguson. Interment was made in the Wassonville Cemetery.
