Enlisted in the Vermont National Guard in Rutland when he was 17 and he served for 24 years as a medic until he retired in 1999. He later volunteered with the Manchester Rescue Squad.
He also worked as a carpenter and also worked at the Danby Marble Quarry and for many years at the Orvis Co. in Manchester
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening. He was a self-taught beekeeper and a member of the Vermont Trappers Association.
Survived by his 2 daughters and their husbands; 2 sons and their wives; four sisters ; a brother; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; his life partner and her children; and many extended family members
Predeceased by a sister, Lucille "Sophie" Edmunds, in 2015; two brothers Maurice F. Stone in 2010, and Ralph D. Stone in 2013.
