Samuel Hunt was listed as the only casualty on an otherwise successful US Dragoons expedition to the Rocky Mountains. Hunt died on Sept. 11, 1835, age 23 years, on the return of the 1645 mile trip from Ft. Leavenworth and back along the Santa Fe Trail. He was buried north of the stream later named in his memory, "Dragoon Creek" atvthe crossing of the Santa Fe Trail.
