William Mays Obituary

We mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, brother, mentor and friend. Bill Mays passed away unexpectedly at home on August 15, 2018 in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. He will be profoundly missed by his family, friends and all who had the privilege to know and work with him.

Bill was born in Chicago, Illinois, the third of four children of Ralph and Hazel Mays. Blessed with a tightly knit family, he and his three sisters were taught to value hard work, education and above all, family. Upon high school graduation, he joined the United States Air Force, serving two tours in Vietnam before returning home. In 1970, a friend convinced him to go out on a blind date and his life was changed forever. That night he met his soul mate, Dottie. Their love affair would go on until they were parted by death.

Bill and Dottie (Berchet O'Daniel) married in 1972. The story of Bill Mays cannot be told without Dottie. They became a formidable and inseparable team in every aspect of their lives, both public and private. Together they raised two children, Valerie and Stephen, teaching them the same bedrock values of family, education and hard work. They lived out these values in front of their children when in 1987, they left the corporate world and founded Call One, Inc. With a combination of creativity, innovation, determination and incredibly hard work, Bill and Dottie became a resounding success. From humble beginnings, Call One has grown to be a multifaceted business with over a hundred employees as well as other ventures including numerous commercial and residential real estate holdings. Generations of loyal families have been employed and given the opportunity to thrive beyond their wildest dreams.

In recent years, Bill again demonstrated his love of family by embarking on an extensive genealogy research project. Tracing his family back to the Revolutionary War era, he discovered far flung cousins and connections lost for decades. Many of these relatives were brought to Florida to meet in person. He warmly welcomed each new cousin. However, he and Dottie have found their greatest joys in the love, success and accomplishments of their son and grandchildren.

Bill was a lifelong learner and never stopped exploring new avenues. In addition to being an avid reader, he became an excellent golfer. He developed an interest in "muscle cars" of the 60's era and created a carefully curated and restored ensemble of the best examples of that time. Throughout it all, his creative and entrepreneurial mindset never wavered.

Many people are included in the bereaved family and friends. In addition to his loving wife Dottie, he will be missed by their son, Stephen C. Mays (Dawn); their son-in-law Jim Morian; their grandchildren Logan, Lauren and Reagan Mays, Victoria Shirley and Carson Morian; Bill's sisters Barbera Mays Jakubanis (Ted), Dee Touhy (Pat), and Kathy Humbert, as well as numerous extended family members. Bill is preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Hazel Mays and his daughter Valerie B. Morian.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 25, Faith Lutheran Church, Merritt Island. Visitation with the family is offered beginning at 9:30, with the service beginning at 10:30. There will be a graveside service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Titusville, beginning at 12:30 and followed by a reception at the Manor House at The Great Outdoors Resort. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by North Brevard Funeral Home. All are welcomed to attend in celebration of Bill's life and legacy.
