JANUARY 1, 1917 – APRIL 24, 2020
Bertha Sue Malone, 103 years young, died April 24, 2020 at the home of her daughter, Louise Stevenson, in Donelson, TN. She was called "Bertha" for the first half of her life, but changed to" Sue" while working at Cracker Barrel in Nashville. Sue was born in Fayetteville, TN on January 1, 1917 to Felix and Alta Butler Campbell. She married Hudson (Hut) Malone on June 16, 1934. Surviving are her four daughters, Gail Moerdyk, Louise (Jerry) Stevenson, Peggy (Lynn) Stubblefield and Deborah (Charles) West. Also surviving are14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; three nephews, Bill Malone of Hazel Green, AL; Jimmy Towry of Fayetteville; Terry Campbell of Cookeville and niece Paulette Wilson of Winchester. Preceding her in death were her husband Hudson (Hut) Malone; her parents, Felix and Alta Campbell; two brothers, Felix, Jr. and Butler; two sisters, Louise Askins and Ruby Towry; three grandsons, Jerry (Bubba) Stevenson, Ralph Davidson and James Davidson; one great-granddaughter Alisha Davidson and one great-great-grandson Michael (Mickey) Donahue. While living in Crossville with daughter Gail and husband Gordon, she volunteered at the Crossville Senior Citizen's Center and life changed forever. She grew wings and traveled to many countries including Great Britain, Europe and Australia as well as Hawaii and Alaska. At the same time, she was encouraged to enter the MS. Senior Tennessee Pageant and became Ms. Senior Cumberland County; co-runner-up of Ms. Senior Upper Cumberland which included Ms. Congeniality and was later presented with the title of Honorary Ms. Senior Universe. She served on the Board of Directors until her death and participated in the pageant at the age of 102 and was looking forward to this year's event. In 2017 Sue was honored by the State of Tennessee House of Representatives on the celebration of her 100th birthday with a proclamation presented by Rep. Mark Pody and signed by Governor Bill Haslam. Although she loved dressing up for pageants, she was equally happy on her "personal" riding lawn mower and paint by number projects. Sue was a member of Lincoya Hills Baptist Church and attended services with Gail at Grace Baptist Church in Mt. Juliet. She was dearly loved and admired for her gracious and gentle spirit and is truly missed by loved ones but has now exchanged her lowly crowns on earth for her Glorious Crowns in Heaven.
