John Bales (1814 - 1887), was the son of William Bales/Bails/Beals (1783 - 1861) and Sarah (Dicks/Dix) Bales (1788 - 1864).

John married Sarah "Sallie" Towell/Towel (1823 - 1884) on 10 June 1837 in Morgan County, Indiana. --- Note: John Bales's brother William "Riley" Bales (1826 - 1877) married Sarah Towell's sister Martha Towell (1828 - 1869) in 1844 in Richland, Keokuk County, Iowa.

John and Sarah had eight known children:
1.) William Worthington Bales (1838 - 1913),
2.) Zachariah "Zack" Bales (1841 - 1908),
3.) David S. Bales (1844 - 1925),
4.) Charles T. Bales (1847 - -?- ),
5.) Henry C. Bales (1849 - 1933)
6.) Nancy Jane (Bales) Sellars (1853 - 1934),
7.) Silas C. Bales (1854 - 1913), and
8.) Mary E. (Bales) Brolliar (1858 - 1936).

Note: His sons William Worthington Bales, Zachariah Bales, and David S. Bales served in the U.S. Civil War as a Privates in the 7th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company K, with their uncles Jonathan Levi Bales and Willam "Riley" Bales, and their first cousin William Dayton Bales.

John was a member of the Iowa State Militia from before March 1852 to after July 1856. However, there is no record that he fought in the Civil War, as did some of his brothers and nephews. When the Civil War began, he would have been 47, with eight children and the youngest just three years old.

John Bales died at age 73, three years after his wife Sallie, who is buried at Old Methodist Cemetery, Richland, Iowa, in a marked grave. His grave is unmarked, however, family members believe he is buried next to her.
