His Mother died when he was a small child and he was raised by his Father and Stepmother, Ruey Taggart Hyde and three half brothers and sisters (Venice,Ilene and Stanley)
He was raised on the family farm in Lewiston and attended North Cache High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 where he received his pilot's training. After the service, he returned to Preston, Idaho, and attended college. He graduated from Utah State University and Iowa State University in veterinary medicine in 1954.

His son, Alan, bought the practice in 1985 and they enjoyed practicing together until three years ago. He was known by most as "Doc Hyde".
"Doc" had a passion for horses and raised and raced Quarter Horses. He wrote the Pari-Mutual Horse Racing rules and was instrumental for the first Pari-Mutual horse races in Idaho, at Emmett. He was the State Horse Racing Veterinarian for approximately ten years and was inducted into the Idaho Quarter Racing Hall of Fame in 2005. His service to his community and the state of Idaho continued throughout his life. He served in the Idaho State Legislature as a senator for two terms and was instrumental in legislation which benefited his district. He took the responsibility very seriously and served with integrity.
His passion for animals also included dogs, and he raised many excellent ones, both award-winning Black Labs and his beloved Red Bone Hounds. He spent countless hours in the mountains on the backs of many good horses followed by many good hounds.
Norris married Norma Witzel in 1988 and they were residing in Ola.
He is survived by his wife, Norma: three brothers and two sisters: three sons, two stepchildren: 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. His family was so very important to him and one of his greatest joys was attending all the sports events of his grandchildren.
He was a man with his heart in the mountains of Idaho and many who knew him were fortunate enough to share time in the mountains with him.
