MaryEllen Brate Johnson, age 86, passed away on Sunday morning, August 20, 2017, with her daughters by her side. MaryEllen was born in Hamilton, Ohio on September 8, 1930, the daughter of Foster and Myra (Gath) Brate. She graduated from Hamilton High School in 1948. MaryEllen married her high school sweetheart, Jay E. Johnson, on September 21, 1951. Their marriage was blessed by three children, a son and two daughters.

Following her dreams, MaryEllen enrolled in college at the age of 40, graduating with honors from Miami University, Oxford, OH in 1974. She spent the next 17 years in a rewarding career as the media specialist/librarian at Hamilton City Schools, and retired in 1992.

Throughout her life, MaryEllen enjoyed many activities, including traveling, jazz and big band music, golfing with friends, and gardening. She had a lifelong passion for elephants which resulted in a large collection of anything "elephant." She easily made friends of all ages, and will be remembered for her loving and compassionate heart, as well as her intelligence.

She is survived by her three children, Frank, Cynthia (Chuck), Nancy (Keith), and her beloved dog Wally. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings Betty Kyger and Philip Brate.

MaryEllen's life will be celebrated with family and friends on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Fellowship United Methodist Church, 2511 New Salem Hwy, Murfreesboro, TN 37128. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. Don Morris will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation (www.alzinfo.org) or The Elephant Sanctuary (www.elephants.com). A private burial will take place in Hamilton, Ohio.
