Thora is a daughter of George Albert Gale and Josephine Amelia Black - the eldest of their nine children. All of her siblings were born in nearby Kirtland, New Mexico: Albert Maxwell, Delila, Elmer Rollo, William Perry, Alonzo Black, Benjamin Levi, Edward Eugene, and George Troy.

Thora married George A Johnson Jr. on May 2, 1922 in Monticello, Utah. They became parents to five children: Dick Larue, Mark Gale, Helen, Duane Kay, and George Terry. Dick was born in Blanding, Utah. The other children were born in Salt Lake City and Springville, Utah. On the 1940 Census the family was living in Salt Lake City.

George worked as a carpenter contractor. Thora made their home life work.
