After William died, Esther appears to have taken over the business, being described on the 1881 and 1891 census as a draper and grocer, living at 20 Manor Road. In 1881 she had 7 children with her, Mary 22, Hetty 21, Nellie 18, Kate 17, Emily 15, Grace 14 and Graham 10. Also two boarders. None of the girls had occupations noted, but they may have been helping in the shop. Also a niece, Lizzie Lavez, 20 and three servants. In 1891 only one daughter, Grace 24 was at home. They had 2 servants.
In 1901 she was living on her own means.
