Pvt King, while assigned escort duty for a mail carrier from Ft. Bowie to Tuscon AZ, was captured and tortured to death by Apache warriors. Also killed with King was Pvt George Knowles. They were originally buried in the post cemetery at Ft Bowie. After the fort closed all military burials were removed to the San Francisco Nat'l Cemetery in 1895.
