Born in Coffee County, Alabama, she was the daughter of John Mack Stokes (1884-1996) and Annie Belle Nelson Stokes (1886-1961) of Alabama. Her parents, John and Annie, were married in Crenshaw County Alabama on December 31st, 1911.
Martha had three sisters and six brothers; Myrtle Stokes Hawkins (1912-1994), Charles Mack Stokes Sr. (1914-1996), Homer Bruce Stokes (1915-1960), Joseph Solomon Stokes (1918-1987), George Fox Stokes (1919-1943), Mary Nell Hollis Stokes (1921-1998), John Mixon Stokes (1923-1951), Margaret Ann Stokes Montgomery (1927-1994), Jackson William "Billie" Stokes (1929-2003).
She married James William "Bill" Baxley on June 10th, 1946 in Shelby County, Alabama.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, James William (Bill) Baxley, Sr.; one daughter, Betsy Baxley Parker; and two sons, James William (Jim) Baxley, Jr. and Timothy Charles Baxley. Survivors also include: five granddaughters, Melissa Anne Parker Dempsey, Cassie Lynn Parker, Mallory Rose Baxley, Meredith Belle Baxley and Jamie Grace Baxley; two grandsons, Jacob Charles Baxley and William Trey Baxley; and two great granddaughters, Ava Scarlett Dempsey and Savannah Kate Dempsey.
She was a faithful member of Shades Mountain Church of Christ in Hoover for many years. Mrs. Baxley attended Auburn University and was a graduate of Huntington College in Montgomery.
Visitation will be Friday, March 11, 2011, at Southern Heritage Funeral Home from 12:00 until 1:00 pm, with graveside services at 1:00 pm.
