He was the son of Capt. William Nickels and Hannah Nickels. He married on May 30, 1816 in Bristol, Lincoln Co., Maine to Rachel W. Child. Capt, Samuel Nickels/Nickols/Nichols (his name appears under all three spellings) was Master of the 235 ton brig 'Ralph', built in Wiscasset, Maine in 1836. (The owners were: Joseph Bradstreet, William Bradstreet, and Samuel Nichols, 1836-37.) He was in the West Indies trade business. For a time, he owned the tavern (built by Mr. Hooper, north of Cold Spring Hill near the Colburn Settlement) in Pittston that also served as a trading business. This was also their home. After Capt. Samuel's death, his widow Rachel lived hear for another 20 years. He died June 3, 1844, age 56 years, 3 months, and 18 days. (Notice of his death appeared in the New York Post on June 5, 1844 , saying Capt. Samuel Nickels died June 3, Staten Island, was 56 years old from Pittston, Mass. (Maine was not yet a State)). He was probably on a voyage there at the time of his death.
