Memoirs of the John Riley Sr. family and emigration from England to Canada in March 1903 were documented by his granddaughter Annie Dalin Lockerby and published in the North Shuswap Historical Society, Shuswap Chronicles, 1993 Volume 4, pages 30 - 32, "Margaret and John Dalin".
John's family initially settled in Exeter, Ontario. About 1904, Mrs Riley was pregnant with her seventh child , developed toxaemia of pregnancy and died in child birth. The older siblings, William, Charles and Margaret headed west for job opportunities. When homestreading opened up at the Shuswap, John moved west with his younger sons John, Edgar and Chris.
