Jorge Javier Rodriguez, aka Big Jorge, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. His wife, Karen, and his family and friends were at his bedside. He was 51 years old.

Jorge was born on April 8, 1967 to Olga and Dr. Ramon Rodriquez in Memphis, Tennessee. He is preceded in death by his father and his fraternal aunt, Aida Caridad Rodriguez.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 20 years, Karen Forbes Rodriguez, his three children, Courtney Taylor Najera (Ray), Brittany Gayle Rodriguez, Jorge Javier Rodriguez, and his mother, Olga Tolon Rodriguez. Jorge also has three sisters and one brother. They are Ramon Rodriguez (Tammy), Carmen Cooper (Jeff), Cuqui Baum (Dr. Larry Baum), and Christy Rodriguez, all of Houston, Texas.

“Pops,” as he was known to his grandchildren, leaves behind Paisley Ray Najera and Colton Ray Najera. He loved all of his nieces and nephews very much. They are Bianca, Campbell, Clayton, Remi, R.C., Dominic, Owen, and Ava.

Jorge attended Texas A&I Kingsville where he was offensive lineman for the Javelinas from 1986 to 1989. During that time, the Javelinas compiled a 38-8 record, won two Lone Star Conference titles, reached the NCAA Division II playoffs (twice), and advanced into the national semifinals in 1988. He was also Honorable Mention Offensive Tackle on the 1980s Team of The Decade.

Jorge started working at Puffer Sweiven in 2008. He will be greatly missed by his customers and coworkers. He was an avid fisherman and volunteered wherever he could. He also coached the Nueces County 4H Trap & Skeet team, a club where Little Jorge Rodriguez shoots. Big Jorge knew every child by name and always encouraged them to shoot their best. He loved cooking, BBQs, and cooking Cuban dishes. Jorge was a gentle giant who always lit up a room with his presence and his smile. He left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Jorge loved classic rock, sports, and war movies. He adored his family and friends.
