James O. (Tony) Rhead, 88, died May 1, 1997 on the golf course where he spent many happy hours of his life.

With his death comes the close of an era. He was the last surviving child of a Utah pioneer.

Preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Verda L. Rhead (1991); his three sisters and one brother. Survived by his wife, Maralyn H. Rhead; his children, Roberta Jackson; James O. (Jim) Rhead, Jr.; Michael V. Rhead; Sylvia Merrill; and Maralyn's children, Michael N. Miller; Stephen B. Miller; Cindy M. Fischer; Debra L. Greenband; Suzi M. Botich; Randy B. Miller; David W. Miller; Ronald Miller and 22 grandchildren. Tony and Verda had 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Born June 10, 1908 in Upton, Utah to James Bourne Rhead and Maria Wilkinson Hortin. Graduated from LDS High School, where he was all-state in football. Played football for the University of Utah and graduated from LDS Business College. Served an LDS mission to Austria-Germany from 1931-1934. Married Verda E. Lillywhite in 1936 in the LDS Temple. Was a heating contractor for 25 years. Night manager of the Hotel Utah, 15 years. Married Maralyn Miller in 1992. Member of the Lion's Club, Dineorators Club and Sons of Utah Pioneers.

As an avid reader and profound thinker, his keen mind inspired many and his quick wit and congenial manner endeared him to all.

Family and friends may call Sunday, May 4, 1997 from 6-8 p.m. at Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 Highland Dr. Services Monday at 12 with one hour prior view at Valley View 11th Ward, 4040 So. 2300 East. Interment, Wasatch Lawn.
