Marine Master Sgt. Toney was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. Toney died as a result of a non-combat related incident at Camp Wolverine. He collapsed; an effort was made to revive him but he never came to. Timothy spent his early years living in the Bronx. His father was in the Army and in 1979 his family moved to Fort Riley, Kansas. They later moved to Columbia, South Carolina where he graduated from high school and joined the Marines, training at Parris Island. While stationed in Okinawa, he coached a Marine basketball team and planned to coach high school basketball when he left the Corps. He also coached children's baseball, basketball and softball. Standing at 5 feet 6 inches tall, Timothy wasn't the biggest Marine but his caring attitude, professional character and deep love for the Corps, family and community made him a giant. He always maintained his composure – when everything was in disarray around him he was the calming force. Besides his work with the Marines, he also put in a lot of time volunteering. He was very involved with the Masons and the Shriners. He would do maintenance and grounds keeping work at local cemeteries, nursing homes and elementary schools and was the driving force in the Special Olympics every year. When he shipped off to Iraq, he told his family not to worry about him because he would be home in November. Timothy always made people smile. He was a free spirit and was always looking out for the family – his wife, Delores, twin 4-year-old daughters, and three stepchildren. Almost every day at lunchtime his fellow Marines would find him at the House of Pain playing basketball. He would give you an elbow in the chest and then give you a big smile.
