1st Baron Herbert of Castle Island, and later 1st Baron Herbert of Chirbury. MP for Montgomery and Merioneth. Knight of the Bath at the coronation of James I. Ambassador to Paris and Warden of the Stannaries. Despite his sons both being loyal Cavaliers, he remained neutral during the Civil War, even allowing Parliamentary forces into Montgomery Castle.

Married Mary Herbert at Eyton, Shropshire, February 28, 1598/99.
