Wagenseller, Snyder County Annals; A Collection of All Kinds Event: 4 acres, 1 horse, 1 cow;Tax Assessment 1775 Buffalo, Union, Pennsylvania, USA Event: Named as deceased son Jacob in Will of John Aurand of Buffalo Township Document 13 JAN 1808 Northumberland, Pennsylvania, USA Death: 1788 in Union, Pennsylvania, USA Birth: Jacob, son of John Aurand, born ca. 1754 in Berks Co. ABT 1754 in Berks, Pennsylvania, USA Event:Abstract of Orphans Court Record of Jacob Aurand. Catherine (above 14), Henry, John, Elizabeth, George, and Jacob, all under 14; Document 05 JUL 1791 Snyder, Pennsylvania, USA Note:Jacob, had six children, Catherine, Henry, Elizabeth, John, George and Jacob. This record was found in Deed Book F, page 128, at Sunbury, Pennsylvania, in an agreement between his heirs above mentioned and John Aurand, their grandfather, the emigrant, a part of which reads as follows: Whereas my son, Jacob Aurand, lately died intestate leaving lawful issue to survive him and are named as given above. He having died in the year 1793. Although it was thought by some that he lived and died at Reading, yet from the county records of assessments of Northumberland which then included Union in the years 1775 and 1780, he with his brothers Henry and Daniel were inhabitants of Buffalo Township, Northumberland County, now Union. Thus showing he did not live at Reading the time of his death. Then according to the court records at Sunbury, of Northumberland County and those at Lewisburg of Union County, Pennsylvania, together with the knowledge of David Ream, son of Henry Ream, who was married to the widow of John Aurand, Jr., who died in the year 1807 and the late John Dunkle who were acquanted with the Aurand family, we were able to trace the families of but three of the children, Henry, John and George. Henry lived and died at Mifflinburg. John near Salem, two miles west from Selinsgrove, and is buried at the Salem church- both have tombstones. George emigrated to the Mohawk Valley in the state of New York. Lived and died in Wayne County of same state. (Rev. Frederick Aurand, History of The American Branch of the Aurand Family from 1725 to 1900; printed by A. M. Aurand, Beaver Springs, Pennsylvania; 1900; Reprinted by Miriam Aurandt Harbaugh in The Aurandt Panorama 1550-1982; Kurtz Brothers; Clearfield, Pennsylvania; 1983; page 203) Jacob Aurand (Johann Jakob, born August 17, 1751 at Bergebersbach, Germany). I have already told of Jacob and his untimely death at 38 years leaving his wife Mary (Anna Maria) Pontius with six children. I have shown also that Mary Pontius, sixth child of John and Anna Catherine (Zeller) Pontius was Johann Jacob's wife, not the wife of the emigrant, Johannes, as earlier historians have recorded. Anna Christina Hoff of Weidelbach, Germany was the mother of Johannes Aurandt's first eight children. (Miriam Aurandt Harbaugh, The Aurandt Panorama 1550-1982; Kurtz Brothers, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, 1983; page 132) Johann Jakob Aurand was born August 1751 in Bergebersbach, Germany and died April 1, 1788 in Buffalo, Union County, Pennsylvania. He married Anna Maria (Mary) Pontius about 1775 in Pennsylvania, daughter of John Pontius and Anna Zeller. In 1753, when he was two years old, he emigrated to America with his parents. In 1772 his father, John Aurand, sold his Maiden Creek Plantation located near Reading in Berks County and later purchased land on the frontier in Northumberland County. Jacob must have moved west with his family and settled nearby. We know he was in the area in 1778-1779 when the Indian uprisings were at their peak. There came into being Ranger Companies made up of volunteers. Through the latter part of 1779, 1780 and through 1782, the Ranger Companies took over the defense of the frontier. There are no records of when Jacob and his brother, Henry, joined the Rangers, but the fact that they served may be found in The Pennsylvania Archives Fifth Series Volume IV pages 579 and 672-698. They are listed in Captain John Forester& Company. During the Indian troubles Jacob's family must have returned to Berks County. Two of his children, Elizabeth and John, were baptised there in 1780 and 1782. Reference: Tulpehocken United Church of Christ, Church Records, Berks County Historical Society. In 1788, when he was only 38 years old, Jacob died unexpectedly leaving his wife, Mary, with six children. Before 1792, Mary Pontius Aurand married Jacob Welker. On April 26, 1793 Jacob's father, John Aurand became administrator of his son's estate and made an article of agreement. Reference: Northumberland County Court Records, Article of Agreement F-128. The article states that the estate is indebted to John Aurand for 206 pounds, 16 shillings and 8 pence; John's will, previously executed, stated that Jacob's farm would be his at his father's death &if he survived his father. John's agreement was that,It is still my intention to provide for the children of my son, Jacob, out of the proceeds of the aforesaid land. On March 31, 1794 Jacob Welker and his wife Mary assumed guardianship of the minor children of Jacob Aurand, deceased. Reference: Northumberland County Orphans Court Records, Volume 2 page 203. Northumberland County Deed Book - L completes the story. August 1, 1800 Jacob's six children, three of them now married, signed a release to John Aurand who had fulfilled his agreement. The children received 1000 pounds of John Aurand of Buffalo Township, their grandfather.
