On Christmas day, 1878 he married Josephine Montgomery. He had one son with her, Edwin A. Gatchel who was born on April 6th 1883. Josephine Montgomery Gatchel died less than two years later on March 12th 1885.
A year and a half later, David married Josephine Rhoda Morrison on November 17th 1886. David and Josephine Morrison had eight children together, two boys and six girls. Wilson David Gatchel, Clara Gatchel DeHaven, Florence Gatchel Wilson, Joseph S. Gatchel, Mabel Gatchel, Grace Gatchel Snipes, Marion Gatchel Ballentine, and Anna Gatchel.
After his father died in 1896, David left the farm and moved with his family to Havre de Grace, Maryland were he worked as a day laborer in a local cotton mill. His older children were able to work at the same mill.
They remained in Havre de Grace for some time, but eventually moved to Chester, Pennsylvania at 936 Potter Street, because of the work available.
