Josephine was raised in Cecil county, Maryland were she met her future husband, David Elem Gatchel. She was the second child of four children born to John Morrison and Mary A. Morrison. Her father and grandfather (Robert John) were Union Soldiers in the Civil War.

She was David Gatchel's second wife after his first wife, Josephine Montgomery died after nine years of marriage.

David and Josephine married on November 17th 1886. David and Josephine Morrison had eight children together, two boys and six girls. Wilson David Gatchel, Clara Gatchel DeHaven, Florence Gatchel Wilson, Joseph S. Gatchel, Mabel Gatchel, Grace Gatchel Snipes, Marion Gatchel Ballentine, and Anna Gatchel. With her step-son Edwin A. Gatchel from David's first marriage, it was quite a crew.

After her father-in-law died in 1896, David and Josephine left the farm and moved with his family to Havre de Grace, Maryland were he worked as a day laborer in a local cotton mill. His older children were able to work at the same mill.

They remained in Havre de Grace for some time, but eventually moved to Chester, Pennsylvania at 936 Potter Street, because of the work available.
