Clara Belle was the second of nine children born to Thomas Jefferson Allen and Mariam Jordan Leighton. She was born in Wassonville, Iowa. Her siblings: Sereptha Amelia (died young), Bertha May, Alice Annette, Ada Estella, Ernest Leighton, Georgia Cornelia (died young), John Everett and Glenn Thomas.

Clara Belle first married John Lewis Poland (son of Simeon Poland and Mary Siegler) on February 27, 1883. He died on August 1, 1883. There were no children.

Clara Belle then married Norton Henry Messenger on March 7, 1888 and they had six children: Lavera Adah [Homer R] Turnipseed; Lee Allen [Ena Smith]; Erna Belle [Thomas J] Moore; Orville Norton [Charlotte Stochl]; Thomas William [Miriam Smith]; and Frederick Glenn [Mildred Allen].

Clara Belle worked as a housekeeper and midwife for much of her life, even assisting in the delivery of her grandchildren.

She began living with her daughter Vera Turnipseed in Wellman at some point after N.H. died as she is found there in the 1940 census. Some time after that she began living with her daughter Erna Moore in Grinnell and that's where she died.

Cause: adeno carcinoma of abdomen and right breast.
Services were in Wellman on January 24 with burial next to her husband in Wassonville.
