Matthew enlisted in the army in September 1861 at the age of 16 at London,Kentucky,he was a private in the 8th Kentucky Regiment Volunteers Infantry, Army of the Cumberland. Union Forces. He was wounded and taken prisoner,before this was known he was listed as a deserter. he was reported AWOL on 07 November 1862 to February 1863. Matt was later traded for confederate soldiers and given a Presidential Proclaimation overuling the desertion charge on 10 April 1863.
Madison was wounded in the leg during the Battle of Chickamaunga,Georgia 18-20 September 1863. He served four years and recieved a medal for serving in the Civil War.
Madison lost his father Henry and brother Joseph in the war.
