Phyllis Cottam Peers, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 surrounded by family and friends. Phyllis was the first of seven children born August 9, 1910 in Grass Valley, Utah to James F. and Caroline (Caddy) Bunker Cottam. An avid horse-woman, Phyllis loved the outdoors and spent much of her childhood helping her father run a summer ranch. After high school, Phyllis left St. George to complete a nursing program at the Bishop Johnson College of Nursing at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California where she graduated with honors. It was there that she met her husband, Albert William Peers.
Phyllis and Albert were married September 1, 1933 and made their home in Santa Barbara, California where she continued her nursing career while helping Albert with his citrus business, and was active in her church and community. They resided in California until she returned to Utah in 1996. Phyllis and Albert had two children, Janet Peers Bassett of Orem and Allan Peers of Spanish Fork. Phyllis had a fearless personality and was interested in trying most things, especially if (as she would often say) "it sounded like a good idea at the time".
After Albert's retirement, Phyllis' nursing took them to an Indian Reservation in Owyhee, Nevada, where she continued to work for the Public Health service for several years. Always busy with handicrafts such as quilting, sewing, knitting, and tatting, Phyllis took the opportunity to also learn to do Indian bead work.
Education was an important priority which she instilled in her family. Phyllis was a voracious reader who was interested in almost any topic. Her special loves were biographies, current national and international events, and history. Even after her eyesight failed, Phyllis continued to listen to several books on tape a week.
Eventually Phyllis and Albert built a home in Summit County, Utah where many friends and family members visited. Phyllis has always been a source of strength and encouragement to her family, providing emotional support and financial help to many. Never one to surround herself with material things, she often said the only thing she needed was a little food and a phone so she could keep in touch with those she loved. Right up to her death she kept track of her extended family's projects and participated in many family activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Ruth Milne and two brothers, Garth and Von. She is survived by two brothers, Evan and Melbourne; her sister, Carol Moseley; her children, Janet and Allen; ten grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A family gathering will be held at Walker Family Mortuary, 587 South 100 West in Payson, Utah on Friday, May 21, 2004 at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Veyo, Utah.
