Manitowoc - Sister Maria José Scharinger, age 90, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, died Tuesday evening, July 10, 2018 at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc.

The former Grace Scharinger was born on June 10, 1928 in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, daughter of the late William and Ida (Jacoby) Scharinger. She entered the Convent in 1943 and professed her vows in 1946. Sister Maria José earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Holy Family College, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and a Master of Arts Degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. Sister Maria José served as an elementary and/or high school teacher at St. Joseph and St. Philip, Green Bay; St. Therese, Appleton; Sacred Heart, Oshkosh; Roncalli, Manitowoc, all in Wisconsin; and St. Ambrose, Ironwood, Michigan. She also taught at Maria Reina, Lima, Peru. After her many years in Peru, Sister Maria José provided various services at San Damiano, Slinger, and Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, both in Wisconsin. Since May 2018, Sister Maria José had been a member of St. Rita Health Center, Manitowoc.

Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; one sister: Gertrude Reindl, Cedar Grove; and one sister-in-law: Christa Scharinger, West Chester, Ohio. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents: William and Ida (Jacoby) Scharinger; three brothers: Joseph, Arthur and Rev. James Scharinger; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law: Sister Teresa Clare, OSF, Genevieve (George) West, Dorothy (George) Kuhn, Jerome Reindl, and Sister Dismas, OSF.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2018 at Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Gerald Prusakowski, OFM with burial at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.
