Genevieve E. West, 86, Wrightstown, passed away at home on Sunday, January 18, 2009. She was born in Sheboygan Falls on November 30, 1922, to the late William and Ida (Jacoby) Scharinger. Genevieve married the late George E. West of Duggar, Indiana, in 1941. In 1950 they moved to Wrightstown where they had the last of their seven children. Genevieve loved to sew and knit. Hats, scarves, mittens, pants, shirts and coats eventually made way for hoop skirts, prom dresses, wedding gowns, and bridesmaid dresses. She had gone full circle back to making sweaters, hats and mittens for grandkids as well as bassinet and crib pads, and baby quilts.
After George died in 1960, Genevieve took great pride in making sure that all seven children had an opportunity to go to college. She always worked hard whether it was mowing, taking care of her vegetable gardens, putting in new flower gardens, or harvesting raspberries. While even at 86 she continued to knit and sew, she spent much of her time quilting. Genevieve has assisted with quilting projects for many years at St. Paul's Parish where she has been a life long member.
Genevieve is survived by six children: Mary Jo (Dale) Thompson, El Paso, TX; Richard (Sue) West, Harshaw; Betty (Gerald) Bastian, Munds Park, AZ; Bill (Barbara) West, Black Creek; Jim (Mary) West, Stevens Point; and Tom West, Santa Fe, NM; 22 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by four sisters: Sr. Teresa Clare; Sr. Maria Jose; and Sr. Dismas, Manitowoc; and Gertrude (Jerome) Reindle, Oostburg; and one brother, Arthur (Christa) Scharinger, FL.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1960, and her daughter, Kathy, in 2000.
Family and friends may call at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 437 Main Street, Wrightstown, on Friday, January 23, 2009. A memorial mass will be celebrated at the church on Friday at 10:30 a.m. with Msgr. Roy Klister officiating. Funeral arrangements by DeWane-Cotter Funeral Home, Wrightstown.
