Recruited into Company I of the 70th Indiana on 9 December 1863. Saw action in Resacca, Cassville, New Hope Church, Lost Mountain, Kenesaw Mountain, Marietta, Peach Tree Creek, Sieg of Atlanta and was on Sherman's March to the Sea.

Had not completed terms of enlistment and along with others were transferred to the 33rd Indiana on 8 June 1865. Then mustered out on 21 July 1865.
