Luella Lukach, 98, Minot, ND, formerly of Noonan, ND, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2018, in a Minot care center.

Luella Marie Lies was born on February 20, 1920 to Mathias and Margaret (Finken) Lies on the family farm near Douglas, ND. She grew up there and graduated from Douglas High School in 1936. Luella received a two-year elementary teaching degree from Minot State University. She started her teaching career in the country schools of Wallmuth (1938-39) and Creek (1939-41). Luella then move to Bowbells Public School (1941-42), Douglas (1942-43) and then to Ray (1943-45).

During this time, Luella met her future husband, Joseph J. Lukach. Luella and Joe wrote to each other during World War II. When Joe returned home, the two were married October 22, 1945. They moved to Joe’s farm near Noonan and raised their four sons: Joe, James, John and Gary.

Luella returned to teaching in 1961 in the Noonan School District as an elementary teacher. She taught in the Noonan and Divide County School systems for 24 years, with the exception of 1969, when she returned to Minot State University and received a BS degree in Elementary and Special Education. Luella retired from teaching in 1985. Joe and Luella farmed, milked cows, raised the boys and championed family life and educational growth in both academics and activities. Joe passed away 1979. In 1985 Luella moved to Garrison, ND to be closer to her siblings. She stayed in Garrison until 2012, when she moved to Minot.

Luella was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church of Minot. During her life, Luella was a devote Catholic and was involved in Altar Society at St. Luke’s (Noonan) and St. Nicholas (Garrison) Church. She had a strong commitment to the American Legion Auxiliary and is a past President of the Western District. Luella’s hobbies centered on painting, gardening, sewing, carving and the love of plants/flowers. Luella was an avid card player and a grandma that always had endless food and treats at her house. During her retirement she became a “caregiver” for her sister Doreen, who had MS for a number of years. Luella traveled to Rome, the Holy Land and to numerous National American Legion/Auxiliary Conferences. Luella’s love of life, her family and her faith will carry on through the generations.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents, Mathias and Margaret (Finken) Lies; husband, Joseph Lukach; brothers, Alvin (Fleeta) Lies, Lawrence (Emma) Lies and Don Lies sisters, Doreen Lies, Mildred (Eugene) Schreiner and LaVerne (Cliff) Malling.
