LaVerne was born March 3, 1925 to Mathew and Margaret (Finken) Lies, in Douglas, ND, where she was raised and educated. She married Rene’ Roberge in 1946. They moved to the farm in Douglas, ND in 1947. This is where their two children, Gordon and Dianne were born. Their family moved to Willow City, ND in 1955, where she worked at the Notre Dame Academy and attended Minot State University in the summers and evenings. Through hard work she received a Bachelor’s degree in education. After Rene’s passing, she and her children moved into the parish rectory and worked as the housekeeper. When the academy closed in 1968, she and her children moved to Rolla, ND. At this time she taught at the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in Belcourt, ND. In 1971, she married Clifford Malling and they made their home at the farm In Douglas. They had 8 wonderful years together before Cliff’s passing in 1979. In 1982, LaVerne moved to Garrison, ND and went back to teaching school for several years at St. Nicholas Catholic School. It took some convincing from Father Backes and Sister Helen, but eventually she gave in. LaVerne was very involved in numerous church and school activities throughout her life. She also was a member of the Nifty Fifties, St. Ann’s Altar Society, and Notre Dame Alter Society. She enjoyed dancing, cards, board games, gardening, playing piano, sewing, crafts, and quilting with her sisters and friends.
