Robert H. Smith, 75, of York, died at 4:16 p.m. Tuesday at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Phyllis M. (Hiestand) Smith.
A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday in Prospect Hill Cemetery with military rites by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Viewing will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Everhart-Jackson-Heffner Funeral Home Inc., 1205 E. Market St., York.
Mr. Smith was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Cleveland. He was the son of the late Benjamin H. and Cora (Sensenig) Smith.
He retired in 1985 from Kinsley Construction in York. After retirement, he worked for Twin Brook Farms in Hellam. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he participated in the invasions of Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy. His plane was shot down June 7, 1944, and he was a prisoner of war until May 1, 1945. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal, three battle stars and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign ribbon with five bronze stars. He attended Temple University and was a member of Shiloh American Legion Post 791 and West York Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8951.
Mr. Smith is survived by three sons, Timothy A. Smith and R. Scott Smith, both of York, and John F. Smith of Manchester; and a daughter, Lisa M. Smith of Dover.
Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Tina Ness, chaplain at Country Meadows of York.
