He was born November 30, 1935 in Ottumwa to John Scott and Velma Bell Sly Songer. He married Mabel L. Sellwood on April 12,1953 and she preceded him in death on April 21, 2002.
Fred was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1954 to 1962. He was a driver for Mayflower and North American Van Lines.
Fred had been a member of Ottumwa Baptist Temple and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Surviving are his children, Steve (Rosie) Songer of Des Moines, Mark (Nita) Songer, Randy Songer and Tammi (Jim) Smith all of Ottumwa; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Barbara Jean Songer; an infant great-granddaughter, Grace Songer; siblings, Mary Little, Betty Hudson, Max, John and Paul Songer.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
