Byrd served in Co. C, 21st NC Regiment in the Confederate Army as a Captain. Capt. Byrd was wounded in the left arm during the battle of Chancellorsville,VA on May 3, 1863 and subsequently the arm was amputated. Capt. Byrd was killed in the battle at Hatcher's Run in VA, his body was packed in sawdust and brother Abner Lee Snow brought it back to Surry County,NC in a wagon for burial at the family farm cemetery.
